The team had a fantastic day with Chester Zoo last Friday, it was just a shame we were not able to make it to both days. Our Giant Bee was out and about, saying hello to the children, either making their day or making them run away (Mostly the former).
We’ve been involved in the Wildlife Connections campaign since the start, having contacted them about organising the Bee Summit we very successfully held in July.
Wildlife Connections is a project led by Chester Zoo to create safe spaces for our most precious local wildlife. By creating connections from one wildlife-friendly space to the next we can create wildlife highways through our neighbourhoods and protect the precious wildlife that we love.
Our day was spent making a giant bee card with the children’s help. We will be handing the finished card over to local MPs soon.
We also asked people to mark our map if they already have a bee friendly garden or to make a commitment to make their garden bee friendly.
These activities were alongside asking parents to sign our petition to their local MP to protect our bees from toxic pesticides. Right now, 3 neonicotinoid pesticides (neonics) are banned here and in other European countries after they were found to pose a risk to bees. But the ban doesn’t extend to
some important crops such as wheat – and they are under constant attack from pesticide firms and the National Farmers Union. A review of the ban is currently taking place. And the Brexit vote means the UK’s pesticide rules could eventually be completely rewritten. We want the government to back a permanent ban on neonicotinoids, and promise that any future pesticide regulations will protect nature and human health. You too can take action today.
The Zoo had lots of activities for the children. It was a fantastic day for the parents and children, getting everybody involved talking about and looking at nature.
